Tuesday's Tip #7: When to Begin the Quest for Your Dress

Searching for your wedding gown is one of the most highlighted moments of planning your wedding. A mistake that many girls often make is beginning too late to search for her dress. So when is the perfect time to start your search?

The facts are simple when it comes to bridal wear. Bridal gowns take six months to order. Unfortunately, there are not many ways around the lengthy time it takes for a bridal gown to come in. Rush cuts are an option, but they are very expensive and the price begins to cut into the budget you have laid out for your gown.

To make the most of your money, and most importantly relieve the stress of worrying about receiving your wedding gown in time, begin the search for your dress about a year and three months in advance. The additional three months allows you time to shop. Don't stress about trying to make it to fifty stores in two weeks. Give yourself three months. Begin the process with research. Find styles you are attracted to. Map out two or three stores you want to visit and try on gowns. To help alleviate additional stress, leave dress shopping to a limited amount of boutiques. The more stores you visit and the more dresses you try on, the more confusing your decision will become and the more time lost. At the one year mark you want to make the big decision and purchase your gown. Purchasing a year in advance ensures you will receive the dress you want because you have given yourself time for the dress to arrive and ignore any issues that may arise in the shipping process, such as natural disasters. Once your dress comes in, you have time to schedule fitting appointments that fit into your schedule. You also relieve yourself and the seamstress of rushing the alterations on your gown.

This is the basic time frame. You can always shop as early as you want. It's not uncommon for brides to shop two years in advance. It depends on the bride and her process of getting things on the wedding list checked off. Just keep in mind to leave at least a year and three months for yourself to find the perfect gown!
